Look, I'm a Printer!

I've been wanting to experiment with printing on glass for a while now...and this commission I'm working on for The Bull Hotel has provided the perfect opportunity. I went to see an excellent talk by Dorset-based printmaker Peter Ursem a couple of months back and it fuelled a deep longing to try it.

By Peter Ursem

For this window, I want to try and create the effect of a wood-block paisley print on the border. I'm using a rubber stamp (I would have loved to have carved my own, but will save that for another time when I have more, er, time) and am using a blend of clove and olive oil to mix my paint up (seems to give it a nice slow drying time and good viscosity). I'm also using this book as my bible.

Early samples are looking pretty good. There seems to be a fine line between pressing firmly enough to make sure the pattern prints properly, but not so hard that the rubber stamp "pulls" the paint away again when you take it off.

But mainly, I just really love using that little roller.

  1. i love the idea of creating a 'lace' effect in glass , this looks like it'll be stunning....
coincidently i've been looking at ways of transferring an actual coloured drawing onto glass and may have to do it to ceramic instead...( ie scanning actual picture , then getting a decal made for firing....do you think this could be done on glass too? ..

  2. I'm pretty sure you can - just a question of finding who will do it! I recommend that book - I got it from Amazon (think it was quite reasonable) - I'm sure the answer will be in there somewhere, it's pretty comprehensive.

  4. They're beautiful. I love the oil pastel look of the image on that book too - is that on glass?

I got a wistful feeling just looking at that roller and those print blocks - always loved printing myself. One day...

  10. This is quite odd... just searched miss moopette on google images & this image came up & at first I thought it was an image from uni of some etchings I had done in the same coloured glass and thought the bits of wood on top, were bits of walnut I was working with too... Randomness... Ah well! Hello!
