Nothing To See Here.
A couple of interesting commissions at the design stage.
A panel that I have finished and submitted for this but don't want to show yet because I want to keep it for a small group exhibition I'm joining in with next May.
A cat that has gone missing for 2 days who normally doesn't even leave the sofa, let alone the garden walls.
So not much to see I'm afraid, but I have re-opened my Folksy shop, if the lovely people that buy my work prefer to buy via a British company.

Royal Mail 2013 Price Increase / Compensation Cover Cut.
I'm cross. I mean really, properly, teeth grindingly cross. In just under 2 weeks time, Royal Mail are changing the way we send parcels. And it is going to affect thousands and thousands of small businesses.
I'm one of those small businesses. The kind that is too busy getting on with the running of said small business to stick my head above the parapet and complain. But last night I wondered if all the small too-busy businesses stuck together and complained, it could achieve something.
This is what is going to happen. Royal Mail is going to divide parcels into three categories. Small, Medium and Large.
OK, you say, that sounds fairly reasonable. Until you read the dimensions of what constitutes a small parcel. Length 45cm. Fine, no problem, quite generous in fact. Width 35cm. Still fine, quite happy with that. Depth 8cm. Fine. Hang on, WHAT? 8CM!!!!
That's not a parcel, that is a FAT ENVELOPE.
So if your nice small parcel is basically, parcel-shaped (i.e. not flat, but 3-dimensional) then it will have to be sent as a Medium parcel. Still ok with that? It's now going to cost you £5.65 to send.
If you read the small print, there is an exception on parcels smaller than 16cm x 16cm x 16cm. So in order to squeeze into that little package, thousands of businesses are having to order in new boxes, re-design products and reduce protective packaging.
Oh, well, I suppose that's not the end of the world. Oh hang on again, there's more....
So you've bought new boxes, you've removed half your protective packaging, you've redesigned your product, all ready to send. Only now the compensation cover should your parcel get lost will only be £20, instead of £46 as it currently is.
So instead of raising the cover limit, as perhaps you might expect them to, to keep in line with inflation, they've more than HALVED IT?
Now, I've worked really hard for the last 4 years building up a small, but flourishing business. And this small business of mine, it's not just a way of earning a bit of pocket money for me while I'm a full time mum looking after the kids. It's much more than that.
It's a way of keeping my (hard won) skills as a traditional stained glass artist up. It's a way of feeling that when my children are old enough not to need me quite so much, I have something to return to. And not only that, I'm constantly learning while I'm doing this. About Marketing, PR, Social Media, Enterprise, Profit Margins, Retail. It's a way of staying connected to the workplace while I'm temporarily filling the role of mum. And there's thousands of us doing the same thing.
And it's not just people who are taking a break from their careers to raise kids who have turned to selling online (Etsy, Folksy, Ebay, Big Cartel, Not on the High Street - and many other e-commerce sites) to keep them ticking over. It's people who've been made redundant, or who have health issues that prevent them from doing a traditional 9-5. It's also talented, enterprising young adults who can't find a job because there aren't any.
And the Royal Mail is going to trample all over us, with these unfeasible postage charges.
Here is a link to Royal Mail's leaflet outlining the new charges: http://www.royalmail.com/sites/default/files/RoyalMail_OurPrices_April2013b.pdf
There is an e-petition you can sign. It's here: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/46737

Lots of very interesting comments have been posted below - well worth a read to find out about different courier options and other people's experiences and ways around the problem. This one in particular sums up my feelings brilliantly:

Signed and shared. This is an issue that needs to be looked at seriously. We're not going to come out of the recession any time soon if small businesses are given this extra hurdle. Small businesses should be encouraged and nourished so that they can grow and contribute to getting this country back on its feet. The government needs to step in. Thank you for posting this petition, it's in all of our interest (as small business owners and consumers) to sign it.
*It has been pointed out that the Signed For option (which used to be known as Recorded) does offer compensation up to £50 on both 1st and 2nd Class options, although of course the size restrictions still apply.

New Postcards / Giveaway
I got some postcards printed recently of two of my most popular designs - Friendly Acorn and 3 Little Cacti. They're professionally printed on thick 350gsm card with a gloss finish. Perfect for framing or sending or sticking or pinning. Available now on Folksy and Etsy.
I haven't done a giveaway for a while, so leave a comment by midnight on Monday 4th March, saying who you'd like to send a postcard to, and I'll pick one winner to receive a little bundle of Through The Round Window postcards, notecards and stickers etc.
Anyone can enter, just make sure I can contact you if you're the lucky winner. Feel free to spread the word via Twitter, Pinterest, blog or carrier pigeon.

This & That

This is a bit of a general admin post really. Firstly I just noticed that I am only 4 sales away from 100 on Folksy which is quite exciting, I do love a good milestone.
So the next 4 sales will receive a few extra goodies in their packages.
>>>>><<<<<
Then secondly I've spent the last few evenings uploading lots more images to my proper website. I was quite surprised to see how much work I've done in the last year!
>>>>><<<<<
Way back when I first started blogging, I did a series called Every Day in May where I featured a different contemporary stained glass artist (nearly) every day. I was really pleased to get a comment on one of those posts recently to let me know that one of my favourite artists, Helga Reay Young now has a new website - and it's really well worth a look. This piece, "So Many Houses" is still one of my favourites.

Lastly, while I'm on the subject of favourites, I just came across this shop, Roma Winkel, on Etsy which I have fallen quite hopelessly in love with.

Separated at Birth
with some new colours and photos.
I couldn't put my finger on it for a while,
but then I realised what the main picture reminds me of...

Procrastination...
...can occasionally lead to productivity.
I was in the workshop late the other night, and didn't really want to be there.
So I started doodling on some of the plans I use to make my singing birds.
I liked what I did, so I made some.
I used some paler, more Spring-like colours, but I will
make them in the brighter colours too in the near future

Last Chance
There's still just enough time to place an order
for "made to order" items in my shops (UK only)
Last order date is Tuesday 13th December.
I do have some items in stock and ready to post though.
Last date for those will be 20th December.

Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose
About this time last year I ordered some festive postcards of my work.
But I managed to get the text upside down on the reverse (idiot).
I didn't want to waste these nicely printed cards, and then I had an idea.
They make very lovely gift tags. Which I shall be attaching to all my gifts.

Acorns and Conkers
I've so many things I want/need to blog about I don't quite know where to start...holiday snaps, great book finds, recent commissions, future plans... but I think I really should start with these two little pieces, since I listed them on Folksy and Etsy before I went on holiday and then promptly closed both shops (which are now both open again)!
As it's September, I can legitimately rattle on about all things Autumnal, so here are my Friendly Acorn and Friendly Conker designs. Me and the girls have been collecting a lot of shiny, newly-fallen treasure from the trees lately (we even got a couple of Spanish lads to leap up and grab conker branches for us in a park in Girona the other day) so I thought it would be nice to capture those friendly little nuggets of polished goodness tucked inside their textured cases.

Nasturtiums

I have quite a few pieces that I've been hoarding
for a couple of years that I want to let go of,
but are quite different in style to my more recent work.
The first pieces I've listed are these nasturtiums,
which I made for the Bridport Open Studios a while back.
There are 2 orange and 1 yellow available, at £15.00 + postage.

Chevron Leaf
More newness in my shops!
Chevron Leaf, in my favourite favourite colour combination
of ochre, indigo and grey.
When I get more time, I am TOTALLY making
a full size window with a repeat pattern of this motif.
A bit like this:

Thanks for all your nice comments and input on my last post.
It's really good to get feedback.

Flowers
To celebrate the arrival of PROPER SPRING,
I've made a new design called Linear Flower.
I'm really happy with this design.
There's something very satisfying about the contrast
between the smooth round shape of the flower
and the edgy zigzag pattern on the surface.
There's currently one in stock (tangerine and turquoise)
Or I can make to order in the colours of your choice.

I like it when people say...
..."Could you make me a {insert interesting thing in here}?"
I had thought about making straightforward Russian Dolls before, not just Mary and Joseph ones. But for various reasons I put the idea to one side temporarily. When lovely Abi popped round to the workshop and asked if could make one, it was a good excuse to dust off the sketches.

I'll be listing this in the shop as a custom order - feel free to choose your own colours.

Oh, still not fixed that problem with red then, Blogger?
